Habitat for Humanity, Redemtech Partnership Provides Refurbished Computers to Bring Families into Electronic Age
Fort Bend Habitat for Humanity is participating in a new program available through Habitat for Humanity International and Redemtech Inc., a Columbus-based IT asset recovery business that helps large companies recycle or resell their old computer equipment.
Fairly new computers that are “cast-aside” when businesses refresh their IT networks often have plenty of life left in them. So Habitat and Redemtech are now distributing these computers to Habitat families. Refurbished, equipped with Microsoft Windows and Office software, and with 90 days of tech support and training, these computers are the first many families have ever owned.
On May 21 and 24, 19 Fort Bend Habitat for Humanity partner families attended training sessions at the Fort Bend Habitat for Humanity ReStore before taking their new computers home. They received instruction in the different pieces of hardware, how to hook up all the cords and cables, and an introduction to the software included on their new computers. The crucial topic of Internet safety was also covered, although homeowners will be responsible for obtaining their own Internet access.
Computers were provided to qualified partner families who already live in a Habitat homes as well as families whose homes are currently under construction, such as Maria Alvarez.
“No more having to wait for a turn (1 hour) at the library,” Maria Alvarez said.
“I want a computer in my home so my children have an opportunity to do their homework,” said Gustavo Martinez.
“I want a computer so I can be more informed with my children’s school activities and other things related to their education, and for my children to be able to do their homework at home,” said Jose Rojas.
Redemtech Inc. has set up its own internal program called the Serious Good Project, to promote to businesses that if they donate their old IT equipment they can enjoy increased tax benefits while helping low-income families. Redemtech includes a no-charge recycling option for the computers as a standard part of the donation process, and ensures that the recipients get a high-value working asset.
Fort Bend Habitat for Humanity is excited about the opportunity to participate in this program and to help Habitat partner families step in to the electronic age.
